PRESS RELEASE 8 October 2026
Institutions and companies come together for a Consensus Statement on Best practices for measuring performance and stability of indoor photovoltaic devices.
An international team of 73 researchers from 63 organisations across 22 countries has published the first consensus statement establishing best practices for measuring the performance and stability of indoor photovoltaic (PV) devices. Coordinated by Prof. Thomas M. Brown and Dr Abhisek Chakraborty of CHOSE, Tor Vergata University of Rome, the study addresses a major barrier to the development and commercialization of indoor photovoltaics: the lack of consistent baseline measurement and reporting protocols, standards, and practices across laboratories and industry for both performance and stability. The consensus provides practical guidance on indoor light sources, spectra and intensities, device characterization, and stability testing, with a tiered approach designed to enable meaningful comparison of results obtained under different conditions. By bringing together academia, industry, metrology institutes and standardization bodies, the work establishes a common measurement framework intended to accelerate the transition of emerging indoor PV technologies from laboratory research to reliable products for the rapidly expanding Internet of Things.
